2023
DocsValència Non-Fiction Space will hold its seventh edition from May 5th to 13th, 2023. Through competitive and non-competitive sections, it will exhibit the highlights of local, national and international production, which will compete for the awards that the juries will grant.
The applause of the audience is the most important. However, each of the prizes has the following financial endowment:
- Valencian Feature Film: 2.500,00 €
- Spanish Feature Film: 2.000,00 €
- International Feature Film: To be determined
- Valencian Short Film: 700,00 €
We’re looking for surprising stories, necessary films, angles and personal perspectives. The Valencian audience is waiting for your documentaries.
Regulations
- The 7th DocsValència Non-Fiction Space will take place from May 5th to 13th, 2023.
- Each participant may submit one or more documentaries.
- DocsValència considers a short film any work that is less than 30 minutes long, including credits. Any work of longer duration is considered a feature film.
- Documentaries may participate in any of the following competitive categories:
- Valencian Feature Film.
- Spanish Feature Film.
- International Feature Film.
- Valencian Short Film.
- We accept all non-fiction genres and formats, of all topics and narratives.
Submissions
6. To participate, those interested must fill out the on-line registration form.
7. The registered works whose original language is not Spanish, English or Valencian must be subtitled in one of these languages.
8. Screeners of submitted works will only be received through password-protected links on Vimeo, YouTube, Drive or another digital platform.
9. Copies in DVD format will only be received in specific cases. To do this, those interested should write to submissions@docvalencia.com prior to sending.
10. Submission is free.
11. Under no circumstances will registrations be accepted after 11:59 pm on Friday, February 24th, 2023.
12. The production date of the documentaries must be after January 1st, 2022.
12.1. In the case of the Valencian short film category, films produced after January 1st, 2021 will be accepted.
- We accept any co-production with any country in the world as long as:
13.1. The majority participation in the production is Spanish to participate in the Spanish feature film category.
13.2. At least 20% of the participation in the film is Valencian in order to qualify for the Best Valencian Documentary Award, both in the feature film and short film categories. The festival reserves the right to request the relevant documentation to prove this requirement.
- The registered works may have been produced or co-produced by or for a public or private television, regardless of whether they have been broadcast or not.
- DocsValència does not require for the submission or for the selection that the films presented are unpublished in the Valencian Community.
15.1. For Valencian documentaries, the premiere in the city of València is required.
15.2. No documentary that has been shown on any streaming or VOD platform in Spanish territory before or during the celebration of the festival may be selected.
Selección
- In the event that the documentary is selected, the person who made the registration will be notified and will inform of the instructions for sending the screening copy, as well as any additional materials that are required
- The producing and/or distributing companies of the participating films authorize the use of one or several fragments of the film for promotional use in any media.
- The Selection Committee will be made up of members of DocsValència and renowned personalities from the non-fiction genre. The committee will carry out its work according to the parameters of quality and creativity previously set by the Artistic Direction of the festival.
- The Selection Committee may change the category of a submitted work if it considers it pertinent, previously notifying it.
- The selection of the films that will compete in the Official Selection will remain confidential until the organization makes an official statement.
Formats
- The screening of the films selected to participate in the Official Selection will be held in Digital Cinema Package (DCP) digital format and MP4/H264 digital format or .MOV. Two copies of the film must be delivered, one in each of the two formats.
Participation
- Subsequent to the notification, the selected ones will receive instructions on the formats of the screening copy and the editorial materials necessary for their participation.
- Those responsible of the films will have 10 business days to send the editorial materials, from the date of receipt of the notification.
- The organization of the festival assumes that whoever registered in this Call for Entries have the rights to exhibit the works they present, exempting DocsValència from any civil or criminal liability.
- In case of being selected, the documentaries that are in the post-production stage (work in progress) will be accepted as long as the reception of the final copy is guaranteed within the deadlines indicated in this Call for Entries. This guarantee will be reflected in a letter-commitment that the festival will provide to those interested.
- DocsValència does not pay screening fees in its competitive sections.
- The selected documentaries whose language is English or any other language must have subtitles in Spanish. If the production company or the person responsible for the submission does not have a subtitled copy, the festival organization can provide it, with a previous quote.
- The filmmakers whose films have been selected in the international section will be invited to València as follows: the festival will assume the cost of accommodation (number of nights defined by DocsValència) and meals for one person per film. In case of co-direction, the festival will pay for a double room and meals for two filmmakers. Nevertheless:
28.1. The festival does not cover travel expenses or any other expenses. But it will support the search for financing with national institutions that can contribute financially to the travel expenses. Requests to these institutions must be made directly by the filmmakers
Awards and jury
- The prizes of the international section will be announced by the organization with enough anticipation[1].
- The Jury will be made up of renowned national and international personalities from the audiovisual, culture and information, which will be announced in due time before the festival is held.
- No member of the Jury may participate, directly or indirectly, in any of the categories. Without exception.
- No member of the DocsValència Organizing Committee may be part of the Jury.
- The Jury’s decision is final.
[1] Prizes include all taxes. The winners must send an invoice for the receipt of the same and take charge of the taxes that correspond in each case. The prizes are subject to current tax withholdings under Spanish law.
Final clauses
34. The registration of the documentaries implies the total acceptance of these regulations. The interpretation and application thereof correspond solely and exclusively to the organizers of DocsValència
- The festival reserves the right to modify these bases at any time and without prior notice.
